ChaosBreed: Hello Yasser, how's the band doing at the moment?
Yasser: First of all Greetings Dave, thanks for the letting us do this interview. The band is doing great at the moment, we have stopped playing shows for a while. We are currently tightening up our material and getting ready to go into the studio to release our self financed, independent MCD.
ChaosBreed: Could you give us a brief history of the band?
Yasser: Hibernus Mortis was born in December of 1995 by original members Cesar Placeres and Ralf Varela. Cesar had just departed from another local Death Metal act named Acrimonium. In order to pursue something more extreme and at the same time original. Together Ralf and Cesar wrote a few of the first songs, later in early 1996, Adam Fleury (Ex-Acrimonium Vocalist) and Doug Humlack joined the wretched Horde of Hibernus Mortis.During that time the band didn't really have a bass player, until Ralf asked an old friend of his to sit in. So for a while Hibernus Mortis was: Cesar Placeres - Drums, Ralf Varela - Guitars, Adam Fleury - Vocals, Doug Humlack - Guitars, Ralf ???? - Bass?
During the middle of 96 I came across Ralf and Cesar at a Monstrosity show, and there they came to me and asked if I wanted to join. I was reluctant at first and I did not join Hibernus Mortis till late 1996, removing Ralf(bass) from the line up and adding me to the current lineup. Hibernus Mortis was now ready to spread its Chaos..
ChaosBreed: You are from Florida. Are there any upcoming bands that in your opinion people should watch out for in your area?
Yasser: As far as our area is concerned, I cant say much for the scene down in South Florida. The current scene consists of, Hibernus Mortis, Malevolent Creation, and HellWitch. Sickness (R.I.P) is no longer, but as the Florida scene is concerned I'd say yes! Burning Inside is a fucking Great band! You sickos out there need to check these guys out, Fast, Brutal and Technical. I was blown away by them when I first heard their material. Also Lore De Umbra, a good dark, emotional and ambient doom band, definitely something you should check out!
ChaosBreed: Give us a few words to describe Hibernus Mortis music?
Yasser: Death Metal, with a big Grind and some Black and Doom Metal influence. All these elements combined, and you get the sheer chaotic terror known as Hibernus Mortis.
ChaosBreed: Any particular subjects that the lyrics deal with?
Yasser: Ralf and
Cesar do most of the lyric writing, and no we don't stick to a certain
theme or subject. Most of the lyric writing is just revolved around dark
subjects. Real life and current events, we aren't going to write about
having sex with a corpse or about some mountains in some European country
we have never been to before. We try to keep it real.

ChaosBreed: What are
your personal influences as a bassist, and what other bands influence Hibernus
Mortis' style?
Yasser: As a bassist I highly look up to bass players like Steve Di'Giorgio, Steve Harris, Tony Choy, Sean Malone and Johann "Joker" Formosa. They have all had a great influence on my playing. We as a band are influenced by all sort of acts, to name a few, Terrorizer, Intestine Baalism, Immortal, Sadus, HellWitch, Kreator, Solstice, Incantation, Suffocation, Cryptopsy, Borknagar, Beheaded, Desaster, Norm Rejection, Iron Maiden VoiVod, Molested, Vader, Carcass, Death, Black Sabbath..just to name a few. |
Yasser: My favorite band? hmmmm...well there are actually 2, and that would be Iron Maiden, and Sadus. They have been a great influence on me as a musician and as a person, I just love their shit. It kills me! At the moment, I can't stop listening to Suffocation, all the old albums. I'm waiting for the new one to come out in early 98. I heard a track off it and it blew me away. I'm just preparing for the utter impact of that CD! its gonna kill us all!
ChaosBreed: What do you think is the main reason why the scene seems to have 'eased' a bit? Do you think that the absence of big bands and big labels within the scene has affected the scene's strength?
Yasser: Well, every
scene has its climax I believe Death Metal had its climax during 91-93,
I think what the current scene is lacking are newer acts with a different
sound or approach to the music. I'm in to a lot of the underground acts,
I've noticed that a lot of them don't have much to offer, but gory lyrics,
and blasting every 2 seconds, nothing wrong with that, but its already
been done. As far as labels are concerned, I've notice one thing, and that
is Death metal doesn't sell. that's why a lot of great acts, Suffocation,
Sadus, etc...have been dropped from their labels. Now what labels seem
to want are Black metal acts, and or as I call them Pantera meets
Korn acts, i.e. Machine Head, Fear Factory etc...those are the acts that
sell. I believe Death metal will arise once again, with new acts that will
revive the scene, some of these acts are bands like Bane, Beheaded, Burning
Inside, and a few others..
ChaosBreed: Do you think Death metal has much more ideas to offer or are bands simply coming up with 'used' ideas?
Yasser: Well, that depends how you look at it, in the scene right now there are a million bands with the name "Corpse" in it, and about good percentage of the acts out there, are either a gore band, or a bunch of "Satanists". Death metal has a lot to offer to its fans, both musically and lyrically. It just depends on the band, and how it presents itself.
ChaosBreed: What do you look for in a band the production and ability as musicians or originality?
Yasser: I'd have to say all of those, production and musical knowledge of ones instrument is a must. Originality is something that is also a must. That's one of the many reasons I joined Hibernus Mortis. I remember hearing the small rehearsal demo they made a few months back when they had no bass player. I was blown away. I've heard a lot of bands, but I had never heard a band with a sound like this. It just blew my mind, Yes, i'd have to say originality is very important.
ChaosBreed: What is the crowd expectancy for a normal gig in Florida? Which was the best gig you played in yet? How many people attended? And with which other bands did you play?
Yasser: (Laughs) Florida shows are rare, but when they do come, they are so poorly advertised that people don't find out, and hardly anyone goes. Wow, best show we played so far was a few months back in October. We drew in like 200+ people, and we played with Malevolent Creation and Sickness (R.I.P). That show was wild, it's great playing for a big crowd, I remember when we opened up for Incantation only a few people showed up and that was a drag.
ChaosBreed: Any particular moments on stage that made you feel a bit worried?
Yasser: Not really, I don't get nervous when I'm up on stage I just do my thing. Although there was one time when we where playing with Malevolent Creation that Adam our vocalist, was running around stage, and he managed to entangle himself around my bass chord, and any sudden movement would disconnect me, I was worried he would unplug me, (Laughs)..
ChaosBreed: What is the current merchandise available from Hibernus Mortis?
Yasser: Right now not much, I have for sale 2 of our shows on video, for a mere $5, We had shirts, but those are currently sold out, in 2 weeks our 2 song demo will go on sale, and in about 2 months our self-released MCD, will be released. So look out for that sickos! (We definitely will ed.)
ChaosBreed: What are the band's plans for the future?
Yasser: Right now, to finish recording, and hopefully get signed. we are going to play a few shows in our area when the CD is released. And hopefully Tour!!
ChaosBreed: Any other comments you would like to add?
Yasser: Yes, I'd like to thank all the sickos out there that have supported us, some of those are David and Dave from Beheaded, Pat and HellWitch, Sergio and Sickness (R.I.P) John and Incantation, Eric "Teufel" Crookes and Aural Armageddon Zine, Adam Butler, Joker and Norm Rejection, Insomnia Zine, Reggie and Bane, Joe and Phil from Sarcotic Abyss, Dagfinn Øvstrud and Pallid Threnody, Josh and Lore De Umbra and to the rest of you I forgot, FUCKING HAIL DEATH METAL!!
